When You Wake Up Feeling “Off”: Listening to What Your Soul Needs.
If you’ve ever woken up feeling off, low in mood, unsettled, or not quite yourself, this might resonate.
I woke up this morning with a dull background headache, the kind that sometimes develops into a migraine (one of the few noticeable symptoms of perimenopause I’ve been experiencing).
I started by focusing on the physical. I had a small breakfast in case my blood sugar was low, and an herbal tea to rule out dehydration. I wanted to reduce the chances of the headache escalating.
Even so, I noticed my mood felt low. Something wasn’t quite right.
I turned to a soothing guided meditation to help activate my parasympathetic nervous system, followed by an uplifting archangel invocation. These helped a little, but I still felt a subtle tightness in my chest, as though I couldn’t fully breathe.
After breakfast and my usual spiritual practice, I sat in meditation and consciously connected with my soul.
That’s when the insight came.
It’s been a full-on week, especially yesterday. Despite a disturbed night’s sleep, I spent hours on computer-based work, and I had planned another full day of the same today.
No wonder I felt off. My system was overwhelmed, mentally, physically, and spiritually.
When I really listened, the message was clear: I needed a break.
I needed to adjust my plan for the day. I needed to reduce the “to do” list, prioritise the “must haves”,park the rest, and consciously set aside time to feed my soul. The soul food I needed was green space. Not just a quick walk to the local park with the dog (which I love), but something more spacious and restorative, a longer walk along the river’s towpath, somewhere quieter, less urban, more connected to nature.
Space to breathe. Mentally and physically.
This is something I’ve learned over time: when I don’t listen to these signals, it costs me. My energy drops further, my body protests louder, and I risk heading towards burnout.
So today, I’m choosing differently.
I’ll complete the “must-haves,” but with clear boundaries around my time and energy. Because I know how easily my mind can push me to keep going, to do more, to override what I actually need.
And when I do that, both my body and my soul pay the price.
Learning to listen, to adjust, to honour what I truly need, is part of my Heart & Soul Awakening journey.
It’s how I create more balance in my life. And how I prevent burnout before it takes hold again.
If you’ve been feeling off in the morning lately, it may be worth gently asking yourself: what is your body—or your soul—trying to tell you today?
